The dryer’s key function is to eliminate moisture recovered during the heating of damp clothing. This humidity is expelled outdoors through the dryer vent ductwork and cap. The U.S. Department of Energy states, “dirty condenser coil can increase compressor energy consumption by 30 percent” because it requires compressors to run longer, increasing energy usage and decreasing component longevity.
Decreased airflow occurs when an evaporator coil is full of contaminants such as dirt, dust, mold spores, moisture and pollen, causing reduced heat transfer and dehumidification processing. This can cause poor air quality and excessive work on the motors leading to system failures.
Foreign materials on the condenser and evaporator become unintentional insulators blocking the free flow of air through the coils and decreasing the rate of heat transfer between the coil and air.
High-efficiency HVAC systems benefit from regular coil inspection and cleaning. The high-efficiency systems operate at higher pressures, and are less tolerant to increased static pressure. They also require more capable heat transfer across larger coils in order to run at optimal capacity. Units with a high Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating generally have variable speed fan motors that adjust on demand but when they need to run faster due to poor coil air flow, the effectiveness of the system is compromised.

Cooling towers move air through the water system with a fan, allowing water vapor to sit within the system. Mineral scale buildup in cooling towers, chillers and system piping is a common challenge for many industrial water systems. A clean cooling tower supplies cooled water to enable the chiller, coils and other HVAC system components to efficiently cool air.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the water vapor can stay within the ideal temperature range for Legionnaires’ disease bacteria to grow. This happens when the cooling tower water becomes dirty with slime, algae and sludge building up on the basin floor. Additionally, dirty water can affect chiller operating efficiency and increase energy costs. You should have the tower cleaned and disinfected whenever scale, slime or sediment is present.

The other components of cooling tower systems are called chillers. Chillers generally use the most energy and regular cleaning and maintenance ensures they operate reliably and efficiently. Chiller performance is related to its heat transfer efficiency and there are miles of tubing in a chiller’s heat exchangers. Keeping the tubes clean means better chiller efficiency.
Tubes can become covered with slime, algae and scale. When tubes become packed solid with deposits, tubes need to be flushed with water and a tube cleaner. We use a rotary tube cleaning machines to clean tough scale, biological and other buildup in chiller tubes.
