Furnace Cleaning

Furnace PartsFurnace cleaning consists of the thorough cleaning of the blower chamber, blower motor, burners, combustion chamber, heat exchanger, pilot light, return duct and supply plenum. It also requires checking the evaporator coil airflow, flame igniter, flame sensor and wiring connections.

How a furnace works

Older gas furnaces use a pilot light to ignite the burners, which is a constant burning flame; modern furnaces use an electronic igniter to ignite the burners. The burners are where the fuel mixes with air to create combustion. The heat exchanger, located above the combustion chamber and the fan motor, blows the warmed air through the supply plenum to the supply registers.

Furnace Cleaning Benefits

Having regular furnace maintenance is key to a safe and trouble-free economical system.

When you don’t clean your furnace, dirt and debris affects all the components of the furnace including the air duct system. A clean and well-maintained furnace will maximize energy efficiency and can prevent many of the expensive no-heat emergency service calls.

Additionally, a clean gas furnace produces the least amount of carbon monoxide while a dirty furnace does the opposite. Excessive carbon monoxide in your home causes people to become confused, disoriented and even cause death death.

Energy Savings

Over 25% of your HVAC systems heating or cooling energy is wasted according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten the life of your system. A clean air duct and HVAC system doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the desired temperature resulting in less energy being used and leads to improved cost-effectiveness.

Many of our customers have their furnace inspected and cleaned every 2 years. They also have it done after a home remodeling or construction project because debris and other contaminants get pulled into the furnace system.

Before cleaning, the furnace system is inspected and assessed. After the system has been checked, the technician will then perform proper cleaning and restoration procedure to all furnace system components.

Air Duct Cleaning

It is the thorough cleaning of heating and cooling system components of forced air systems, including the supply and return air ducts and registers, grilles and diffusers, heat exchangers heating and cooling coils, condensation drain pans, fan motor and fan housing, and the air handling unit housing.

hvac tuneup

These components may become contaminated with particulate matter such as dust, dirt, smoke, pollen, or organic compounds if not properly maintained. If moisture is present, the potential for microbiological growth (i.e.: mold) is increased and spores from such growth may be released into the home’s living space. Some of these contaminants can cause allergic reactions or other symptoms in people when exposed to them.

It’s important for all components of the system to be cleaned. Failure to clean a component of a contaminated system can result in re-contamination of the entire system, thus negating the benefits.

Indoor Air Quality Benefits

Indoor Air Quality
Indoor air quality is a homeowners primary concern when deciding to have the air duct and HVAC system cleaned. Every day living in a six-room house can annually generate several pounds of contaminants such as pet dander, allergens, dust and dust mites, debris, pathogens and chemicals. These contaminants are pulled into the HVAC system and re-circulated 5 to 7 times per day, on average. The re-circulation over time causes a build-up of contaminants in the Air Ducts and the HVAC system.

Dirty air ducts may be contributing to larger health issues or harboring contaminants that could cause serious problems for people with respiratory health conditions, autoimmune disorders or some environmental allergies.

Energy Savings

Over 25% of your HVAC systems heating or cooling energy is wasted according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten the life of your system. Despite using filters, the heating and cooling system still gets dirty through normal use.

A clean air duct and HVAC system doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the desired temperature resulting in less energy is used and leads to improved cost-effectiveness.

We use several different cleaning tools to clean and inspect your air vents. These tools include access tools to create entry points in the HVAC System to facilitate inspection and cleaning (these areas are later sealed); the Rotobrush system to loosen debris; high-powered vacuum devices to create negative pressure within the HVAC system (this allows us to remove the contaminants during the cleaning process); the Flex-A-Lite fogging system to sanitize and disinfect.

The Nok Out product we use eliminates biological and organic decay such as mold, mildew, bacteria, and fungi, and it does NOT contain chemicals harmful to the environment. It is also fragrance free, biodegradable, non-toxic, non-corrosive, non-stating, non-masking and hypoallergenic as well as EPA registered and approved as an affective biocide, vericide and fungicide approved by the USDA for use in food processing areas.

Air Duct Cleaning Schedule

Many of our customers have an Air Duct and HVAC inspection and cleaning every 3 to 4 years. Our customers with pets, or that have low tolerance to allergens, tend to have it done every two years. Home remodeling customers have an HVAC inspection and cleaning when the project is completed because air duct and HVAC components often collect a significant amount of debris and particulates during the construction activities.

Dryer Vent Cleaning

clogged dryer vent needing cleaningThe dryer’s key function is to eliminate moisture recovered during the heating of damp clothing. This humidity is expelled outdoors through the dryer vent ductwork and cap.

Lint will buildup over time and cause blockage within the components preventing proper ventilation and is a dangerous fire hazard. The lint trap generally catches 75% of the lint while the remaining either gets caught in the dryer ductwork or expelled out the dryer vent. Lint buildup in the ductwork occurs over time and creates a very serious a fire hazard.

before and after vent cleaning

Clogged Dryer Vents are a Serious Hazard

According to the U.S. Fire Administration’s National Fire Data Center, clothes dryers are responsible for approximately 15,600 structure fires around the country each year. Eighty percent of these fires start with clogged dryer vents, and result in 15 deaths and 400 injuries on average annually. Thousands of other home occupants are treated for symptoms of poisonous gas fumes that back up into the home due to blocked dryer vents.

Dryer Vent Cleaning Benefits

Lint is very flammable and is easily ignited by the heat. Dryer vent cleaning protects against fires, smoke and pollutants. Your dryer will run more efficiently reducing operating costs and energy consumption and your dryer will last longer and clothes will dry quicker.

We clean the lint and debris surrounding the dryer, the outside vent and connections using air snakes, air wands and various brushes. Sometimes we need to disassemble the ventilation system to properly clean it.

The air snakes, air wands or brushes are inserted into the dryer ventilation ductwork and are used to eradicate loose and solid debris within the venting ductwork. Elbows and bends require the most time to complete because they are the areas where lint and other debris tend to build up.
